Nightingale Class Staff:

Miss Ingle – Class Teacher
Mrs Amatt – Teaching Assistant
Welcome to Nightingale Class! We are the second youngest class in the school and the Year 1 and Year 2 children learn here. We provide a happy, safe and caring environment where children feel secure, giving them a strong foundation for learning. We encourage children to become independent and confident learners, to explore and discover things for themselves, whilst supporting them to make connections in their learning. The children work with adults, their peers or independently, to access their learning environment, both indoors and outdoors. We provide high quality teaching, organise school trips and offer enrichment activities, in order to encourage our children to become life-long learners and good citizens in the wider world.
Year 1
In Nightingale Class, the Year 1 children study the National Curriculum. We teach core subjects: English, Maths and Science. We also deliver foundation subjects: Art and Design, Design and Technology, Computing, Geography, History, Music, RE, PE and PSHE.
The children in Year 1 take part in the national phonics screening check during the summer term. The screening check was introduced in 2012 to all Year 1 pupils. It is a short, statutory assessment to ensure that children are making sufficient progress in the phonics skills to read words and are on track to become fluent readers, who can enjoy reading for pleasure and for learning. The check is not about passing or failing but checking appropriate progress is being made. If children do not reach the required standard, then we will be in touch to discuss plans and offer additional support, to ensure that your child improves their reading skills. Children progress at different speeds so not reaching the threshold score does not necessarily mean there is a serious problem. Your child will re-sit the check the following summer term. In our school, we already identify individual children who need extra support and provide early intervention, tailored to their needs

Term 4 2024-25

We were very lucky this term to have received a visit from Mr Szydlowski. He came to deliver a talk to support us with our topic ‘Who was the first person to fly?’ He talked about his role in the RAF and discussed some of the jobs he did. He shared information about important historical figures such as Neil Armstrong and Amelia Earhart and the children had the opportunity to share some facts they had learnt about famous pilots too. Thank you very much for coming into school Mr Szydlowski, it was a wonderful experience and we learnt so much.
Earlier on in the term, we walked to the village hall for pancakes. These were delicious and the children loved them. Thank you to the lovely people at the church for cooking them for us.
Nightingale Class took part in session one of their grow your own potatoes workshop this term. The children learnt about soil, healthy foods, parts of a plant, food from around the world and then planted their own potatoes. Thank you to all the workshop leaders who ran the session and we are looking forward to part two!
In Science, we have been learning about plants and what plants need to grow. We planted seeds and bulbs and have completed a weekly plant diary. We learnt that we can eat some parts of a plant and explored the importance of plants and why we need them.
Mrs Crowson continues to come into our class once a week, to help us with our reading. The children get so excited to see her and thoroughly enjoy reading with her and we are very grateful for the time she gives up to help us with our reading. Thank you Mrs Crowson 😊
We have been lucky enough to visit the park with Gerald this term. Well done Nightingale Class for your super attendance!
Happy Easter everyone,
Miss Cannon, Miss Ingle and Mrs Amatt 🐥

Grow Your Own Potato workshop – part 1

Term 3 2024-25
Nightingale Class have adapted well to the changes that have occurred this term and are enjoying being a Year 1/2 mix. The children are building new friendships and working well as a team.
Our topic this term was based on ‘The Great Fire of London’. The children have learnt a variety of facts and explored this important event in history. We have ordered events on a timeline, looked at the causes and consequences of the fire and also researched into Samuel Pepys. In order to support this topic, we received a visit from Amy, from the fire service. She taught us about the role of the fire service, how to stay safe in our homes and the importance of having fire alarms in our houses. She also encouraged the children to make sure they had a safety plan and an exit route agreed with their families, in case of a fire at home.
In DT, we learnt about materials, properties of materials, joining techniques and how to strengthen materials. Our challenge was to design a piece of furniture and make it using a range of materials and joining techniques. We then evaluated the furniture and discussed what we would change if we had another go.
In Science, we have learnt about forces in our local environment. The children explored items in the classroom/school grounds that required a force of push or pull, in order to work. The year two children were challenged to push items with a heavier mass and managed to move a tractor tyre together! Great work Year 2s!
The children have learnt about various religions and festivals in RE this term. We have researched into Eid al Fitr, Sukkot and Holi. When learning about Sukkot, we found out that a ‘Sukkah’ is built and used for the special festival. The children worked in pairs to make a ‘Sukkah’ using natural resources such as leaves, twigs and sticks. They showed some amazing teamwork skills and thoroughly enjoyed this hands on learning experience.
