Reading Rocks

Term 6 2024-25

It’s been another extremely busy term for reading across the school. Each class now has a ‘What We’ve Read’ display on their class door. It’s incredible to see the different genres that the children have been exposed to this term and the wonderful books they’ve read.

Our Reading for pleasure is even more evident across the school. So many children have won golden coins and, seeing Thomas’ corner being used every break time is wonderful.

Thank you to everyone who has sent in photos of their child enjoying our weekend book bags. They are still very popular and I’m excited to take them home over the summer and restock them with new books.

I’ve been busy completing a Reading for Pleasure course throughout this academic year. A lot of new ideas have been put in place and there’s still more to come. Last week Miss Ingle and I had a zoom call meeting and I’m very proud and excited to let you know that St Bartholomew’s has received our ‘Bronze award’ This means we have been officially recognised as a Reading for Pleasure school and have been acknowledged in our efforts to promote reading for pleasure. They said that they could see that we encourage students to be fluent, confident and enthusiastic readers. This award will be displayed on our letter heading and website.

We are now excited to go for our Silver!

Our Golden Coin winner for this term is Dahl! Congratulations! Please see the photo ☺️

Reading Club KS1

This term, the children of KS1 have been welcomed to the first after school book club and what a success it has been! Each week different book related activities have been set out ready to help the children develop their love of reading. We have had word searches, design a book character, hangman, Pictionary and of course lots of reading for those who would prefer a quieter time to unwind and dive into a fantasy land full of imagination. When asked what their favourite part of each session was, the majority said the time at the end in which we all came and sat together to pick and read a book as a group.

We are very excited for book club to continue next year and this time welcoming KS2!!

Thank you all very much all.

Are you ready for a challenge? I know we love a challenge!

Please see the Summer Reading challenge that I have set for this holiday. It would be wonderful to see as many of you as possible complete this over the 6 weeks. There are 2, one for KS1 and one for KS2. Please bring your completed challenge to me on the first day back. All challenges will receive a prize! There is also a QR code to scan which will take you to a list of recommended reads.

Wishing you the most wonderful, safe, relaxed and fabulous holiday.

Golden Coin Winners

The children were extremely excited this term when the reading shed was opened. They have all enjoyed spending time in there and I’m particularly proud of how well the children are looking after it. Thank you to my reading ambassadors and Rosie for making sure it’s open and closed every break time.

Because of our new reading shed; I felt it was important for the children to all have access during the playtime’s so Reading Rocks has been outside. They children have enjoyed using this on a Friday and adding a golden ticket to the post box.

It’s been a short term but a lot of golden tickets have still been posted. Well done to Nightingale for winning the golden coin this term.

Congratulations to all the children that have won a book from the vending machine this term. We are all extremely proud of you.

I am excited that Miss Amett has organised a Book Club for KS1 after school starting next term. Thank you for signing up. I am excited to be involved with this next term. Have a lovely half term, keep safe and keep reading. 📖

Term 4 2024-25

Our celebration of World Book Day this year was just lovely. The children all came to school in their comfy clothes. They enjoyed visiting each class throughout the morning to learn about 4 Authors. In Dahl class they looked at Roald Dahl. The children designed their own Wonka bars and learnt about his famous story ‘Charlie and the chocolate factory’ As they left Dahl class each child was given a gift of chocolate. Thank you, Miss Cannon! In Nightingale Hiba Noor was the Author and the children soon found out about her love of science. During the session Mrs Peach carried out some experiments with the children and read one of her beautiful books. In Darwin Miss Illingworth introduced the author Joseph Coelho and in Franklin Miss Cox, Oliver Jeffers. During the afternoon the children were able to practice their performance poetry and then we finished the day with reading with parents. Thank you to everyone that came along during the afternoon. Please scan the code to watch Nightingale and Darwin children’s  performance.

The weekend books bag has been busy this term, halfway through I needed to top up the hot chocolate! This is just wonderful, and I love receiving all your photos so, thank you.

The winners of the most golden tickets this term is Franklin. Well done.

Reading rocks invited Dahl this term to the library on a Friday but the weather turned so nice we went outdoors! Thank you to my librarians and reading ambassadors for running this club and reading to any child across the school during lunchtime.

Wishing you all a lovely Easter holiday.
